Express your love for nature!

The Black Footed Ferret is a Lazarus species, which was thought to be extinct until it re-appeared on a ranch in Wyoming in 1981. This highly endangered animal has suffered from the eradication of prairie dogs from ranch lands, which it relies on for food and shelter in their prairie dog tunnels.

Learning about life changes our perspectives on our world. It inspires new technologies, explains mysteries, and encourages understanding. Curiosity nourishes discovery and inspires creativity. When studied right, learning about life allows us to understand ourselves better and better accept others in the process.

Here are some of my personal favorite ecology learning resources everyone should check out! (External Links)

All About Birds offers one of the most extensive references for bird identification in North America.

The World of Flora Online offers an extensive collection of information about all known plants on the planet.

The Texas Master Naturalist Program trains the public in the best practices for natural resource and wildlife volunteering. Becoming a Master Naturalist opens up new volunteer opportunities and outdoor experiences.

Sadie Lou Hays is an art project about nature and animals. I want to educate and enlighten about nature and ecological systems. Learn with me and discover new creatures, new organisms and the amazing ways they interact to make up our natural world! Re-discover your curiosity by outside to adventure on hikes and making observations. Follow me on inaturalist, (sadielouhays), Instagram (sadielouhaysart), or like me on Facebook (Sadie Lou Hays).

The name Sadie Lou Hays was inspired by two very memorable canines in my life, Sadie and Lula. The last name is after my home base in Hays county, Texas.

Sadie

Lula

Sadie was a pound puppy. When she came to us, she had mange, she was lonely and not really cute to look at, but she had heart. Half rottweiler and half blue heeler, she was smart and spunky.

Sadie was smart. When my father was growing peppers in the yard, she would beg for a taste. The day that he obliged her, she spat it out. Hours later, she had flattened the pepper plants. That was it for the jalapenos that year.

Lula came from a family of 15 puppies! Not from one mom, though. A family with two dogs got two litters of puppies from a promiscuous father in the neighborhood at the same time. Lula was the Red Heeler. Half of the others were labs. Her father was never determined.
