This microscopic animal gets its name from the structure around the mouth which looks like a wheel covered in cilia which it uses to filter feed detritus and dead organisms such as algae.

This microscopic creature we call Vorticella finds a place to anchor itself for most of its adult life after being free-swimming in earlier life. Like a little black hole, it then makes its living by sucking up any unsuspecting bacteria that floats by into its funnel-shaped mouth. You can find them anywhere there is fresh water; even among plant roots. They have to look out for Rotifers though, who may find Vorticella be a tasty snack.
